Hello, I am Xavier Daru, I am French, I speak to you from Limassol, where I participate in the World Championship organized by AIDA, and today I would like to talk to you about neck weight for deep freediving. I'm not talking about swimming pool neck weight or spearfishing neck weight, it's very different.
Make Sure It's Comfortable
The neck weight needs to be above all very comfortable. It needs not to be too heavy on your jaw, as you are going to do a mouth fill. It needs to be totally compliant with comfortable mouth fill.
The Right Size
It needs to be not too tight around your neck, but not too loose neither because you want to be very streamlined as you descend.
Weight Range
The range of weight is generally between 1 kg and 2.5 kg. I mean that above 2.5 kg you should put some weight on your belt, because around your neck it will be too much. Keep in mind also that when you transport your neck weight it needs to be not too heavy neither because most of the time you have at least 23 kg in your luggage.
Scalability
Also another point, the neck weight needs to be scalable, I mean the weight should be modified easily, by adding or removing some parts from it. Thus, you can adapt a little bit the weight to some change, there can be water change, wetsuit change, discipline change even. So generally freedivers use duct tape to add some weight around the main structure. So you can add and remove it, it gives you a little bit of scalability.
