Carlos Diezel had a well-paid job in Brazil, working for a big multinational company. However, he decided to switch careers, and even though he had a wife and two kids, managed to take the plunge and move to Dahab to be a full-time freediver. Why?

Not Sustainable

"The life we were living in Brazil was good. I was working for a multinational company as a mechanical engineer in a small, very organized town in the south. Nice weather, amazing nature. The company was really great because they were not so extremely profit driven. They think about profit long term rather than quarter wise. This changes the game a lot, psychologically the stress level is less. If you are under a lot of stress, your life's not healthy anymore.

Although I was very active, going to the gym and did jogging, I felt that for my health that life wouldn't be really sustainable. Now I know that when I'm 60, if I keep up doing what I'm doing, it's gonna be easy to be healthy, if I'm lucky enough not to have any weird disease. It was very clear to me that the job I was doing at that time, wasn’t interesting for me anymore. When we decided to move to Dahab, I was on a sabbatical period with regard to my old job. If we didn’t like the new life, I would still be able to go back. But after moving here, as time went by, I started to like freediving, more than I expected actually. So I went from becoming an instructor to becoming like an established instructor, joining Dahab Freedivers and then becoming a partner".
