The Pressure Behind The Perfect Dive

Open social media and search for freediving and it does not take long to understand what the sport apparently looks like. Divers disappear effortlessly into blue water. Carbon fins move almost without resistance. Equalization appears automatic. Freefall looks completely relaxed. Athletes descend to depths that most people cannot imagine reaching, return to the surface smiling, and shortly afterwards another extraordinary dive appears on the screen. The images are beautiful, and there is nothing inherently wrong with celebrating exceptional performance. The problem begins when someone new to freediving starts interpreting these exceptional moments as a representation of normal freediving.

They are not seeing the athlete's journey. They are seeing its edited result. Social media is built around selective self-presentation, the process through which people choose which parts of themselves and their lives other people get to see. Research has documented how users select, edit, and publish photographs for an audience, creating representations that naturally emphasize particular moments rather than the complete reality surrounding them. In sport, that selection becomes particularly powerful because the moments most likely to attract attention are usually the extraordinary ones: the personal best, the perfect descent, the competition dive, the spectacular location, the medal, the record, the flawless technique.

What rarely appears between those moments is everything required to create them. Nobody sees thousands of equalizations performed during training. They do not see the dives aborted at fifteen metres because the ears would not cooperate. They do not see months spent correcting body position, the strength and mobility sessions, the recovery days, the nutritional discipline, the early mornings, the disappointing competitions, the injuries, the plateaus, the failed personal best attempts, or the sessions when an athlete simply felt terrible in the water. They rarely see the years during which a world-class freediver was not world class at all.

That missing information matters because the human brain evaluates progress comparatively. Social Comparison Theory proposes that when objective standards are uncertain, people naturally assess themselves by comparing their abilities and achievements with those of others. Social media provides an almost unlimited supply of people who appear to be doing better, a phenomenon known as upward social comparison. A 2026 meta-analysis involving 54 independent samples and more than 36,000 participants found a significant association between upward comparison on social media and poorer psychological adjustment, including greater anxiety and depressive symptoms and lower self-esteem and wellbeing. The relationship does not mean that seeing an exceptional athlete automatically damages mental health, but it demonstrates that repeated comparison with people perceived as superior can meaningfully influence how individuals evaluate themselves.

Freediving creates particularly fertile ground for this comparison because performance can be reduced to extraordinarily simple numbers. Twenty metres. Thirty metres. Fifty metres. One minute. Three minutes. Five minutes. A beginner does not need sophisticated knowledge to understand that someone else is going deeper or staying underwater longer. Numbers make comparison immediate, while social media removes most of the context that would make the comparison meaningful. A new freediver may be comparing their third month in the sport with someone else's fifteenth year without consciously recognising that this is what they are doing.

This is where inspiration can quietly become pressure. The new diver begins with a perfectly reasonable desire to improve but gradually develops an imaginary timetable for that improvement. Thirty metres should happen soon. Then forty. Static apnea should already be longer. Equalization should be easier. The equipment should be better. Progress should be visible. Worse still, progress should perhaps be shareable. Instead of asking, "Am I becoming a better freediver?" the question can slowly become, "Am I progressing as quickly as everyone else?"

But "everyone else" does not exist. It is an algorithmically assembled collection of exceptional moments from thousands of different people, delivered one after another until exceptional performance begins to look ordinary.




When Inspiration Turns Into Comparison





Social media can absolutely be beneficial to sport. It can introduce people to freediving, connect communities, spread educational information, expose athletes to new training ideas, and provide motivation. Research on social-media-based physical activity interventions has found that these platforms can encourage positive changes in exercise and dietary behaviours. The problem is therefore not social media itself. The problem is what happens when inspiration becomes continuous comparison and when someone else's outcome becomes the standard against which a beginner measures their own worth.

The research surrounding fitness content provides an important warning. A 2026 meta-analysis examining 26 studies and more than 6,000 participants found that exposure to so-called fitspiration content increased social comparison and unhealthy dieting and exercise motivations while negatively affecting self-esteem, body image, appearance satisfaction, and mood. Other research on sport-related social media has found that perceived social pressure and comparison help explain the relationship between exposure to athletic ideals and body dissatisfaction. These studies are not specifically about freediving, and it would be scientifically irresponsible to pretend that they are, but the psychological mechanism is highly relevant. Freediving social media combines athletic achievement, extraordinary physiques, beautiful environments, specialized equipment, and measurable performance in exactly the kind of visual environment where upward comparison can flourish. 

For younger divers this deserves particular attention. Adolescence and young adulthood are periods during which identity, self-esteem, body image, and social status remain highly sensitive to external feedback. A systematic review examining adolescents and young adults found associations between intensive or problematic social media use and body dissatisfaction, lower self-esteem, risky behaviours, and eating-related problems, while research specifically examining young adults has found that social media encourages comparison and the pursuit of external validation. Experimental research also indicates that idealized body content can negatively affect body satisfaction, with recent evidence suggesting that short-form video platforms may amplify some of these effects.

In freediving, the pressure does not necessarily concern appearance alone. It can attach itself to performance. The body becomes something that must produce a particular number. A dive that would have been an extraordinary achievement before opening Instagram can suddenly feel disappointing after watching someone else descend twice as deep. Progress that should create satisfaction begins producing frustration because the reference point has moved. The diver is no longer comparing today's performance with their own performance six months ago. They are comparing it with the best performance someone else decided to publish today.

Psychology also tells us that the perceived distance between ourselves and the person we are observing matters. Upward comparison can be inspiring when the other person's achievement feels attainable. It can create admiration, optimism, and motivation. But when the gap feels too large or impossible to close, comparison can produce very different emotions, including inferiority, envy, shame, anxiety, and discouragement. Research examining online social comparison has repeatedly connected these processes with lower self-esteem and depressive symptoms, although causality can run in both directions and people already experiencing psychological difficulties may also be more vulnerable to negative comparison. 

This distinction is crucial. The problem is not seeing someone dive to one hundred metres. The problem is seeing one hundred metres without seeing the ten years behind it and then interpreting your own thirty metres as failure.







Freediving Does Not Owe You Fast Progress





Freediving is particularly unforgiving of artificial timelines because progress depends on multiple systems developing at different speeds. Cardiovascular adaptation is only one part of the equation. Equalization must develop. Technique must improve. Flexibility can require months or years of consistent work. The diver must understand buoyancy, weighting, recovery, safety, equipment, and changing environmental conditions. Psychological adaptation matters enormously because relaxation at a familiar depth is very different from relaxation at a depth the mind still perceives as threatening. Nutrition, sleep, recovery, coaching, frequency of exposure, and previous athletic experience all influence the process.

Then there are plateaus. They are not evidence that someone is bad at freediving. They are part of learning almost any complex skill. Progress is rarely linear. A diver may improve rapidly for several months and then remain at approximately the same depth for an entire season. Another may struggle with equalization while developing excellent technique. Someone else may possess exceptional breath-hold capacity but require years to become genuinely relaxed at depth. Bodies are different, learning histories are different, and opportunities to train are different. Comparing those trajectories as if everyone started from the same place makes little physiological or psychological sense.

Yet social media largely removes plateaus from view. Algorithms have little reason to show six months of apparently uneventful training. They reward novelty, achievement, emotion, and spectacle. The result is a distorted perception of how athletic development actually occurs. The viewer sees breakthrough followed by breakthrough because hundreds of athletes are contributing their best moments to the same feed. The brain then constructs a false narrative in which everybody appears to be progressing continuously.

This can create a dangerous motivational shift. Self-Determination Theory distinguishes between motivation that feels internally chosen and motivation increasingly controlled by external pressures. Research in athletes has found that more self-determined motivation is associated with lower burnout, while reduced feelings of competence and autonomy are strongly connected with burnout symptoms. When someone begins freediving because they love the water, enjoy the silence, want to explore their limits, or simply feel fascinated by what the human body can do, motivation is largely internal. When depth becomes evidence of whether they are good enough, motivation begins changing. 

Now every unsuccessful dive threatens perceived competence. A failed personal best is no longer simply information about today's condition. It becomes evidence that progress is too slow. Someone else's success can begin feeling like evidence of personal inadequacy. The sport that originally created freedom gradually becomes another environment of evaluation.

Perfectionism can intensify this process. Contemporary sport psychology distinguishes between striving for high standards and the more problematic side of perfectionism involving excessive concern over mistakes, perceived pressure, and harsh self-evaluation. Research in athletes has linked perfectionistic concerns with fear of shame and negative emotional responses to failure, while recent reviews emphasize that maladaptive forms of perfectionism can harm wellbeing and performance. 

This is where dropout becomes understandable. When progress is interpreted through unrealistic expectations, normal difficulty begins to feel abnormal. If someone believes they should reach a certain depth within six months and does not, they may conclude that they lack talent. If every session becomes a test of whether they are progressing quickly enough, enjoyment declines. When perceived competence falls and external pressure rises, the psychological conditions associated with persistence become weaker. Research across sport shows that burnout, controlled motivation, and motivational climate can influence performance decline and dropout, while supportive environments and social support help athletes persist. 

For some people the response may be quitting. For others it may be anxiety, compulsive training, increasingly harsh self-criticism, or unhealthy relationships with food and exercise. Research examining idealized fitness content has found associations between social media exposure and symptoms related to disordered eating, orthorexic behaviours, and muscle dysmorphia, particularly when nutrition, thinness, and exercise-focused content dominates the feed. Again, this does not mean freediving social media inevitably creates these conditions, but it provides strong reason to take the psychological environment seriously, particularly among younger athletes. 







The Real Journey Needs To Be Seen





None of this means elite freedivers should stop publishing extraordinary dives. Those performances deserve to be seen. They inspire people, advance the sport, demonstrate what the human body can achieve, and have introduced countless people to freediving. Removing achievement from social media would solve nothing. What needs to change is the context surrounding achievement.

The sport needs to become better at showing the distance between beginning and outcome. When an athlete publishes a ninety-metre dive, there is value in occasionally talking about the years required to reach it. When someone achieves a personal best, there is value in acknowledging the failed attempts that preceded it. Coaches, schools, athletes, brands, and media all have an opportunity to make training visible rather than showing only its rewards. The boring sessions matter. Recovery matters. Nutrition matters. Education matters. Safety drills matter. Failed dives matter. Turning early matters. Taking a month away because the body needs recovery matters. None of these experiences makes an athlete less impressive. They make the achievement more understandable.

Young freedivers also need to be taught a form of media literacy specific to sport. A feed is not a representative sample of reality. It is a selection of moments optimized for attention. The athlete appearing on the screen may have spent ten thousand hours creating the thirty seconds being watched. Their depth says nothing about where another person should be after six months, two years, or even five years. Their body is not a nutritional prescription. Their equipment is not automatically appropriate for everyone. Their training volume may be completely unsuitable for a beginner. Their personal best is certainly not someone else's deadline.

Perhaps the healthiest comparison in freediving is the least exciting one to publish: yourself against yourself. Is equalization more reliable than last season? Is technique cleaner? Are dives calmer? Is recovery better? Are safety habits stronger? Do you understand your body more clearly? Can you recognise when to turn without interpreting it as defeat? Are you still enjoying being underwater? These measures rarely generate spectacular videos, but over years they create experienced freedivers.

Freediving is not supposed to be mastered quickly. That difficulty is part of what gives the sport meaning. Deep diving requires education, repetition, physical adaptation, psychological development, appropriate equipment, good nutrition, quality recovery, experienced instruction, reliable buddies, and thousands of decisions that nobody will ever see online. It also requires failure. A diver who never experiences difficult sessions, plateaus, aborted dives, frustration, or uncertainty has probably not been diving for very long.

Social media shows us the destination because destinations are easy to photograph. The journey is slower, less glamorous, and much harder to compress into thirty seconds. But the journey is where the freediver is actually made.

A hundred-metre dive may take two minutes. Becoming the person capable of making it safely can take a decade. The sooner new freedivers understand that difference, the more likely they are to give themselves permission to learn, fail, adapt, and progress at the pace their own body and mind require. The goal should never be to keep up with someone's feed. It should be to build a relationship with freediving that can survive long after the algorithm has moved on to something else.
