In 2024, the Mao Mana Foundation continued to blaze a trail in marine conservation, further cementing its role as a pivotal force in protecting our oceans and their inhabitants. From advancing scientific research to educating the public through media, the foundation’s accomplishments this year are nothing short of extraordinary. Let’s dive into their milestones, examine their significance, and celebrate the impact they are having on marine ecosystems.

Advancing Marine Research: A Year of Data and Discovery

Scientific research is the cornerstone of effective conservation, and the Mao Mana Foundation has made significant strides in understanding marine ecosystems this year. One of their most impactful initiatives in 2024 was the implantation of 16 acoustic tags on tiger sharks, an apex predator crucial for maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. These tags allow researchers to track the movements, behaviors, and interactions of these majestic animals, providing invaluable data for conservation strategies.

In addition to tiger sharks, the foundation has also focused on the enigmatic oceanic whitetip shark, a species that has faced severe population declines due to overfishing and bycatch. With 31 direct observations of oceanic whitetip sharks recorded this year, the foundation has significantly expanded the existing knowledge base about this species. Moreover, the deployment of 3 satellite tags on oceanic whitetips has allowed researchers to monitor their long-range migrations, offering insights into their habitats and movement patterns that are critical for their protection.

Cutting-Edge Tools: BRUV Deployments

This year saw the deployment of 80 BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video) systems, a technology that allows scientists to observe marine life without human interference. These systems are particularly valuable for monitoring elusive or endangered species and documenting biodiversity in remote or underexplored marine areas. By analyzing the footage from these deployments, researchers can assess the health of marine ecosystems, identify threats, and inform policy recommendations to safeguard these underwater worlds.

Science in Action: Publications and Conferences

The culmination of a year’s hard work in research often finds its expression in scientific literature and discussions at global forums. In 2024, the Mao Mana Foundation has a scientific publication under review, which promises to add to the growing body of knowledge in marine conservation. Publications like these not only inform the scientific community but also influence policy decisions, helping to ensure that robust data back conservation measures.

Further amplifying their impact, the foundation participated in two major global conferences this year: the BLS8 in Tokyo and the IUCN/ISRA event in Fiji. These platforms allowed the foundation to share their findings, network with other conservation leaders, and advocate for urgent action to protect marine ecosystems. Attendance at such prestigious events underscores the foundation’s role as a thought leader in the field.

Bringing Conservation to the Mainstream

One of the most impressive aspects of the Mao Mana Foundation’s work is its ability to bring marine conservation into the public eye. In 2024, the foundation collaborated on four mainstream media documentaries, each of which showcases the beauty and fragility of our oceans. Through stunning visuals and compelling storytelling, these documentaries aim to inspire audiences to take action by becoming more aware of the challenges facing our marine environments.

These documentaries also serve as a reminder that conservation is not just a scientific endeavor but a collective responsibility. By reaching a global audience, the Mao Mana Foundation ensures that their message resonates far beyond the scientific community.

Why These Achievements Matter

The work of the Mao Mana Foundation goes beyond impressive numbers and accolades. Each tag implanted, each observation recorded, and each documentary produced represents a step forward in the fight to preserve marine biodiversity. Here are a few reasons why their 2024 achievements are so significant:

1. Protecting Keystone Species: Sharks, including tiger sharks and oceanic whitetips, play a critical role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. By studying and protecting these species, the foundation helps ensure the health of entire marine habitats.

2. Driving Policy Change: Scientific data gathered through tagging and BRUV deployments can influence regulations on fishing practices, marine protected areas, and more.

3. Raising Public Awareness: Documentaries and public outreach efforts help bridge the gap between science and society, encouraging individuals to take action in their own lives to support conservation.

4. Building Global Partnerships: Attendance at international conferences fosters collaboration among conservationists, ensuring that efforts are coordinated and impactful on a global scale.

A Strong Partnership

Alchemy is proud to support the Mao Mana Foundation and its groundbreaking work in marine conservation. The foundation’s on-the-ground efforts to protect keystone species, advance scientific understanding, and inspire global audiences truly make a difference. Alchemy remains committed to continuing this partnership, recognizing the profound impact the Mao Mana Foundation has on preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.

Looking Ahead: Building on Momentum

As we reflect on the Mao Mana Foundation’s achievements in 2024, it is clear that their work is not only making a difference today but also laying the groundwork for future success. Looking ahead, the foundation plans to expand its research initiatives, strengthen its advocacy efforts, and continue inspiring the next generation of conservationists. Whether through more BRUV deployments, additional tagging programs, or new documentaries, the foundation is poised to build on its momentum and tackle the challenges that lie ahead.

However, achieving these goals requires continued support from governments, businesses, and individuals alike. By contributing to organizations like the Mao Mana Foundation—whether through donations, partnerships, or simply by spreading the word—we can all play a role in preserving the beauty and biodiversity of our oceans.
