According to both Egyptian and Russian authorities, a shark attack in the waters near Hurghada, Egypt, has resulted in the death of a Russian man. The incident occurred at one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts. The Egyptian environment ministry reported that the attack involved a tiger shark and promptly closed off a 46-mile (74km) stretch of coastline, which will remain restricted until Sunday, June 11th. The ministry has since captured the shark and is conducting laboratory examinations to understand the factors behind this uncommon attack. The Russian consulate in Hurghada confirmed the nationality of the deceased as Russian, without disclosing his identity. According to Russia's Tass state news agency, the victim was a Russian man born in 1999 who resided in Egypt permanently and was not a tourist.

A video that is circulating online appears to capture the harrowing incident, showing a man struggling in the water as a shark repeatedly attacks him, encircling and eventually submerging him. According to a diver who arrived at the scene shortly after the attack, bystanders rushed to assist the victim upon receiving an alert from a lifeguard at a nearby hotel. However, their efforts proved futile as they were unable to reach him in time.

In a statement released on their official channel via the Telegram messaging application, the consulate emphasized the importance of vigilance among Russian tourists while in the water and urged them to strictly adhere to any swimming restrictions imposed by local authorities.

Although shark attacks in the Red Sea coastal regions are infrequent, two separate incidents occurred in Hurghada in 2022, resulting in the deaths of two women—one Austrian and one Romanian—within a few days of each other. Egypt's Red Sea resorts, such as Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, are renowned for their beautiful beach destinations and are popular among European tourists. The steep coral reef drop-offs just off the coast attract divers seeking vibrant marine life.

There are several factors that could contribute to a tiger shark attacking a human, although such incidents are relatively rare. Some possible reasons include:

1. Mistaken Identity: Tiger sharks are known to have a broad diet and may occasionally mistake humans for their natural prey, such as seals or turtles, due to similarities in their appearance or movement.
2. Provocation or Aggression: In certain situations, if a tiger shark feels threatened or provoked, it may exhibit defensive or aggressive behavior. This could occur if a human inadvertently enters the shark's territory or encroaches upon its personal space.
3. Curiosity: Like other predators, tiger sharks are naturally curious creatures. They may investigate unfamiliar objects or beings in their environment, which could lead to an interaction with humans.
4. Feeding Opportunities: If a tiger shark encounters a human engaged in activities that simulate or resemble the behavior of wounded or distressed prey, such as splashing, diving, or wearing shiny objects, it may perceive them as potential food sources and engage in an attack.

It's important to note that shark attacks on humans are still relatively rare considering the millions of people who enter the water each year. Sharks play a vital role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems, and efforts are made to better understand their behavior and minimize human-shark interactions to ensure both human safety and the conservation of these magnificent creatures.
