Alli Penovich is a devoted freediver, instructor, and spearo. She also is a 4X spearfishing World Record holder. In an interview with Florida Freedivers, Alli revealed a few things about what to do if you are out hunting for one yourself.
"I have three world records myself, and one pending. My first world record was a red snapper when I was 17 or so, way back when, it was 11.3 pounds. The next year I beat it to 19.2 pounds and that still stands. We went out on a late Sunday afternoon, it was almost sunset. I didn't really see too many fish but we went to this one spot at about -60ft. I swam down to the ledge, and there was this snapper swimming along and it turned and gave me a headshot. I didn't stone it but slowed it down and so I grabbed the front of my gun because I didn't want it to get stuck. It was a dog snapper and it was a pretty decent size, 11.3 pounds. Two years ago I got the triple tail world record. The important thing to do is have a certified scale somewhere, and then get a picture with your fish on the scale. Make sure you also take all of your measurements - length & girth. There are rules on IUSA and they give you a whole outline of how to submit it. The most important part is to have friends that have boats and good spots, and your local speargun-smith, so you’ve got your gun and make sure everything is set to go".
