When you're traveling, if you're going to the other side of the world to a place that you don't know anything about, it's going to take you a while to figure out where the fish are. And if you have only a week to go enjoy your holidays and shoot some nice fish, you're probably not going to get them. That's where the spearfishing guides and charters make a difference. Alchemy spearo, David Ochoa, explains everything you need to know about booking the charter for the trip of a lifetime.

What Does A Guide Offer?

We put the time in, we go there, we go scouting,  sometimes we spend months just figuring out where the fish are and what can we do to find them, and that will increase your chances hugely of landing a nice fish. So I think that's one of the main things about charters and guiding. It just increases your chance of having a good experience.  Then on top of that, there's the technical aspect to it as well. Because again, if you're diving in a new place, there are different techniques, there are different ways that you can approach fish, even in terms of safety you know. Are there sharks, what can you do to deal with them? And I feel from a big range from, you know, beginners that are looking just to improve their basic skills,  to experienced divers that are just trying to get better at different aspects of spearfishing around the world, I feel that that's also a big point.

Content Creation

And then there's the filming and the photography aspects of it, which is one of the big things that we do. We have a very nice team that offers not only guidance but also cover the whole experience, so at the end of the day,  you're able to take home all of those memories and really nice moments and you can share that with your friends, to your kids, it's just memories that you get to keep. I feel that that's a big part of it because if you're spending a lot of money to go, you know, live these experiences, it's nice to be able, you know when you're back to your regular life, I think it's good to go back and be able to, you know, relieve those memories.

Skills Improvement

And then there's also the technical side of it, because if we're filming you during the whole trip, not only you get those memories and those moments, but it's also a very good way to be able to go back and point all the little things that you can improve. And that's a big part of our job as well, not only making sure that we film you being at 5 meters or 40 meters, but also to then go back and be able to help you improve your skills.

Options

So there are a lot of different options when it comes to spearfishing charters.  I think the two main differences are you can go on a daily trip, you go to a nice place, we set a nice hotel for you, and then we just spend the day diving. It can be half a day, it can be 12 hours, it just depends on how keen you are. And then you also have the liveaboards, which are a completely different experience, something that I really advise people to try at least once and usually, they take no less than a week. In my opinion that should be the minimum, because you know it always takes you a little bit of time to get used to it, especially if it's your first time,  and you don't want to make it too short, because by the time that you're getting the hang of it,   then you're going back. So usually it starts from one week to two weeks, we've done up to four weeks and that's something that I feel you should try. Of course spearfishing it's such a complex sport, you can do so many different kinds of diving and techniques, but usually on the trips you kind of divide into two general areas, we either do bluewater hunting or reef diving. So blue water, usually it's offshore, sometimes you don't even see the shore, you don't see the bottom usually, it's quite deep waters, and even though there should be structure, we always look for places where there's upwelling,  a lot of times there's a lot of bait and birds and action, but it can also be quite slow. It's a kind of spearfishing where it takes a lot of patience and most times it's an all or nothing.

Bonds That Last For A Lifetime

For me, the biggest thing about these trips is the relationships that you create along the way. I  do believe that you get to know someone quite well when you're traveling, and, you know, it's easy to be nice in your daily life, but when you spend a lot of time in the same place, let's say you're on a liveaboard for like three weeks, all of those filters go away, and I feel you create bonds that will last for life.
