Do fish shrink? Well, they definitely do when you grill them, but what about when you put them on ice? During one of his latest expeditions, Key West Waterman asked himself the same question and he put the whole thing to the test.

Here's What Happened

"I often get into conversations with FWC officers about fish shrinking and i always say that they shrink and they tell me that they don't, so today's science experiment is finding that out! We just shot this wahoo, it’s as fresh as can be, and its size is 54 and a half inches. Remember that number! We're gonna ice it down, i might let it sit overnight so it really chills, because it's late in the day and we're gonna get a measurement after it's cooled and do science!

So, i've got the same fish from yesterday, you can see there's a nice hole there, same shot location, same fish, it's been icing all night. During the majority of the time, you shoot fish earlier or catch fish or spear fish earlier in the morning, they ice all day and they have time to shrink. We shot this fish late in the afternoon, and i wanted to let it sit on ice and get a true test. Got this tape nice and flat and there we are, right at 53 and a half inches! So this fish lost over an inch, which doesn't sound like a lot , but when it comes to regulations and abiding the law, that can be a big deal. Luckily wahoo is not one of the fish that need a measurement, but there are a lot of other fish that do shrink, i’ve seen it happen"!
