Jeffrey Bernus

Freediver - Marine Biologist - Scuba Diver

Jeffrey is a marine biologist, scuba diver, freediver, underwater photographer, and spearfisherman with roots in the Caribbean, where his love for the ocean began. With over 3,000 dives, he witnessed firsthand the damage humans have inflicted on marine ecosystems. As vibrant reefs turned into graveyards, his mission to protect the ocean became personal.

He studied marine biology across the globe—from veterinary school in France to coral ecology in Guadeloupe and sustainable development in Canada. Alongside his conservation work, Jeffrey is an award-winning underwater photographer whose images have been published internationally. For him, spearfishing is a sustainable way to harvest fish, carefully chosen by size, species, and location, without bycatch.

Jeffrey is also the co-founder and director of the Caribbean Cetacean Society, an NGO dedicated to protecting whales and dolphins through regional cooperation, research, and education. He now leads the largest cetacean research program in the Caribbean, conducting first-time expeditions across many islands.

Whether diving to 95 meters or facing rough seas, Jeffrey never hesitates to defend the ocean he calls home.
