Spearo - Guide

Robert John was born and raised on the island of Guam, where the ocean was never more than a few miles away. His connection to the sea began early, fishing with his father for game fish like mahi, tuna, and wahoo.

Though he didn’t grow up freediving, that changed when his cousin Nicolas returned from Hawaii and introduced him to spearfishing. Inspired by the challenge and simplicity of the sport, Robert traded in his passion for racing cars and took the plunge. He learned quickly, progressing with each dive and venturing into Guam’s deeper blue water—an area few dared explore due to sharks and strong currents.

In 2016, Robert and his dive partner Peter Heradura made history at a local competition by landing a 47-pound wahoo from shore—the largest ever recorded on Guam by spearfishing. This catch helped shift the island’s spearfishing culture. A year later, they returned with a 51-pound wahoo and took first place again.

Robert’s competitive drive took him to Baja, Mexico in 2018, where he placed third overall and won first in the reef fish category at the Blue Water World Cup. He began documenting his dives through video, sharing his adventures on Instagram and YouTube.

Today, Robert is an ambassador for Evolve Diving, Aussie Reels USA, and Alchemy Spearfishing, continuing to inspire with every dive and every frame.
